A 22-year-old architecture student studying in a private engineering college in Bengaluru committed suicide at his home on July 11. The tragic incident took place in Nandaramayyan Palya area under Madanayakanahalli police station limits. It is suspected that the student took the extreme step following alleged ragging and mental harassment in the college.
The student, Arun, was in his final year of Architecture course, and he had secured a free seat in the college on the basis of academic performance. Hailing from Hassan district, Arun was not from a well-to-do family. His parents are daily wage labourers. Arun had a keen interest in painting, especially portrait making, and was well known for his work in this field.
Arun was alone at the time of the incident as his parents had gone to work. Before committing suicide, he recorded a video in which he mentioned his mental condition and said that some classmates used to badmouth him, due to which he was disheartened. He also accused some friends of ragging in the video.
According to New Indian Express, the video went viral in a college WhatsApp group. After seeing the video, the college administration informed Arun’s family, but by the time they reached home, Arun had committed suicide.
At present, the police have registered a case of unnatural death and are waiting for the complaint from the family. The police have said that further action will be initiated in the case as soon as the complaint is received.
