OpenAI has rolled out a major improvement to ChatGPT’s memory feature, which will now give users a free, better, and seamless experience. Earlier, this feature was available only to paid subscribers, but now free users can also carry forward the context of their previous conversations, making the conversation more natural and relevant.
According to OpenAI’s support document, this update has started being implemented for free users from June 3, 2025. Now, ChatGPT can also refer to recent chat history in different sessions, so that consistent and personalized responses can be given according to the user’s habits and instructions.
OpenAI states that this system does not rely only on saved memory, but also takes into account recent conversations temporarily. This means that ChatGPT can now give more accurate and contextual answers without repeatedly specifying old preferences.
For those who are unaware of this, it is important to know that ChatGPT’s memory is designed in such a way that it can remember the information given in previous conversations. For example, if a user indicates that he doesn’t like “em dash” or wants a response in a certain tone, ChatGPT can apply this to future conversations as well. This makes conversations more personal and consistent over time.
While this is a significant advancement, there are still some restrictions for free plan users. According to reports, the memory in the free version only offers short-term persistence, while ChatGPT Plus or Pro users get detailed memory access to older sessions.
Memory Management For All Users
Despite the limitations, users who do not want to keep their information saved can turn off the memory feature completely or delete specific memories through the settings. Additionally, there is also an option for “temporary chat”, which is like private browsing and does not save any data.
This update is considered a big step towards making ChatGPT more user-friendly and adaptive.
