Cam and Followers FAQs

The cam is a profiled disc, cylinder or sphere that rotates. The shape or profile of the cam influences the motion of the follower.

The cam is directly in contact with the follower. A follower is another component of this machine, made to oscillate or reciprocate by the cam. The primary purpose of this component is to convert rotational motion into linear motion for another component.

Cam and follower are mostly used to transmit the rotary motion into linear motion in IC engines.

Disc or plate cam with roller follower are used in IC engines.

The pressure angle is a function of the cam rotation angle. We can express the force ratio expression for the pressure angle using the kinematics of the mechanism.
