- यह अनुदैर्ध्य तरंगों (संपीड़न या विरलन) के रूप में गति करती है
ध्वनि तरंगें तीन प्रकार की होती हैं:

- पराश्रव्य तरंगें: 20,000 हर्ट्ज से ऊपर की आवृत्ति की ध्वनि तरंगों को पराश्रव्य तरंगें कहा जाता है। कई जानवर जैसे चमगादड़, बिल्ली, कुत्ते, चूहे आदि इसे सुन सकते हैं।
