Ripple is the small unwanted residual periodic variation of the direct current (dc) output of a power supply that has been derived from an alternating current (ac) source.
The % ripple is given by:
% ripple = \({Output\space AC \space component \over Output\space DC \space component}\times 100\)
The input ripple of SMPS is high.
This ripple is due to incomplete suppression of the alternating waveform within the power supply.
The ripple can be reduced by smoothing capacitors which converts the ripple voltage into a smoother dc voltage.
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used for this and have capacitances of 100uF or more.
