X can complete the work in 12 days.

Y can complete the work in 18 days.

X and Y work together for 4 days.

Calculation:

            Time taken Total work Efficiency
X 12 36 3
Y 18 2

 

Efficiency of (X + Y) = 3 + 2 = 5

Since they both work together for 4 days,

So,

Work done by both in the 4 days

⇒ 4 × 5 = 20 units

So, Remaining work = 36 - 20 = 16

Now,

Time required to do remaining work by X = 16/3 days

So, total time to complete the work = 4 + 16/3 = 28/3 days
